A lot is being said about Kid Nation – the new CBS reality show that had 40 kids rebuild a ghost town over 40 days. This morning I saw a clip of the abc news online which raised some new questions regarding child labor laws and the 22 page release form signed by parents. As a tv writer with a special interest in children’s programming and a mom, I am intrigued. What exactly did the kids do? What kind of goals were set for them? Did working with children from diverse backgrounds make them a new person? One part of me says “wow! this is a lifetime experience. I would love to send my kid.” And the other shudders at the thought that he will be in the hands of a film crew in a deserted movie-set town for 40 days. I am torn. I am interested in seeing how this changes reality tv in general. Will this lead to a slew of shows that dare to take chances? Or will it just push them to stay within their boundaries? One thing’s for sure – these kids have come back changed. I can only hope it’s for the better.

I’m starting to get sick of the whole reality craze. However, maybe it will teach kids who watch the show some valuable life lessons. You never know.
